1. INTRODUCTION

The future of Silsden may be under threat. Bradford Metropolitan Council’s proposals for the town include major areas of new housing and industrial development that will result in irreversible change to the local setting of Silsden. This Town Design Statement has been prepared by the people of Silsden, for the people of Silsden and to provide a grass roots approach to how we wish the town to develop.

The Silsden Town Design Statement (TDS) aims to:

  • Describe Silsden as it is today

  • Set out guidance for the design of any future development of the town

This TDS explains what is special about Silsden and the features that give it a unique character. It aims to give residents a say in the future development of Silsden, and to offer guidelines on conserving its particular qualities.

The work has been undertaken over a 4-year period by a small group of volunteers. The strategy has followed recommendations by the Countryside Agency, and has included a major questionnaire. The TDS has been endorsed by the people of Silsden through a process of consultation including:

  • Public meetings

  • An extensive questionnaire distributed to every household

  • Consultation with Planning Aid

The TDS is for everyone involved in the process of change that may affect Silsden and its surroundings. Thus it will be of importance to householders, planners, developers, builders and public bodies.
