10. CONCLUSION

As Bradford MC considers the future development of Silsden, the voice of the people of Silsden must be considered. The consultation and questionnaire exercise has produced important results as follows:

  • Over 80% consider that Silsden cannot accommodate more housing development

  • Silsden is dominated by car use, with over 75% using cars regularly

  • More traffic calming in the town centre is required, and further traffic studies should be undertaken to resolve key danger spots

  • New industrial areas should be restricted to small scale development

  • A footbridge over the Aire Valley trunk road is required

  • The countryside around Silsden should be protected

Should major development occur around Silsden then the public bodies responsible for authorising such development have a responsibility to ensure the people of Silsden are suitably compensated with the provision of improved recreational facilities, such as a new public swimming pool.

Appendix 2 TDS Consultation

Silsden Enterprise and Action Team was set up in summer 2000 with a view to producing a Town
Design Statement (TDS) for Silsden. A consultation process commenced using an approach
recommended by the Countryside Agency.

In summer 2001 SEAT distributed a questionnaire to every household in Silsden. Approximately 3,600 questionnaires were sent out, of which data from 1154 returned questionnaires was used. The results were collated and analysed to build a picture for the TDS.

The task of data inputting was completed in early 2003, which was followed by a 3 day exhibition of the results in May 2003. This exhibition resulted in additional information which was added to the TDS.

The TDS was completed in spring 2004, following consultation with Bradford Metropolitan Council.

ADDENDUM

Reference has been made, within this Town Design Statement, to 'The Bradford Unitary
Development Plan (UDP)' particularly in relation to section 7 Development Sites. Site specific recommendations have been made against those areas of land identified within the UDP by Bradford Council, should those areas ever be developed.

At the time of going to print the final outcome of the adoption by Bradford Council of the UDP had not
been resolved.

The Silsden Town Design Statement was laser printed by Hadfield Photocraft http://www.hadfieldphotocraft.co.uk
