60 Odd years old and I have never heard that word before, I had to Wikipedia it.

The term, coined in the 1800s, originally referred to someone who kept a "length" of road neat and tidy.

I worked on the railways many years ago and that job term was given to rail men who worked at every station, there would be a gang of them ( but into days P.C term they would be known as a team, ).And their job was to check the line in there area, length was the term given to the rail, ( rail length )so may be the name was taken from a road man..

Having read the job description, I would venture to suggest that a list that long is going to take more than any 20 hours a week!

It must be remembered that lengthsmen have no legal standing and must therefore be circumspect when approaching members of the public. Normally, the best course of action is merely to observe and report. Contact may be necessary in exceptional circumstances in which case the lengthsman must remain calm and polite and avoid an authoritarian approach.

Why has there been so many experts voicing an opinion about this job? I hope you are all going to apply for it as a discussion has never happened for jobs advertised here in the past.happy :)happy :)

A few facts as to why this position has come about:

Bradford want to off-load the runing of the public toilets in Silsden and Addingham onto our local councils. If we do not take them over they will be demolished. sad :(

.... and a few facts from the 2012 Silsden Survey

Q. How much of a priority (for Silsden) do you think each of the following should be for Silsden Town Council and Bradford Council?

A. Clean Streets and open spaces - 67%

Q. Which of these currently most needs improving?

A. Clean Streets and open spaces - 45%

Q. How concerned are you about each of the following in Silsden?

A. Dog fouling - 64% (top priority)

Q. How important to you is the maintenance of each of the following in Silsden
and the surrounding area?

A. The becks - 73% (top priority)

Q. Which of these do you think should be done to keep Silsden clean and tidy?

A. Employ litter warden / sweeper - 82% (top priority)

You and many others, I suspect, do not look at the Town Hall notice board. sad :(

This is a local job and STC and Addingham would like it to go to a local resident.

Skippy - thanks for clearing that up - some folk have thought that the job is only 20hrs a week when in fact its a full time job.

Is this minimum wages? there is no indication as to the rate of pay - which I think would be on everyones mind when applying for it - even if its just an "in the region of"

I may be wrong, but it is my understanding that this is two jobs, for two people so that when one is unable to work due to hol's / illness or whatever the other person will be able to cover.
I am sure somebody will say if I am not correct.

I think that the statement"Acting as eyes and ears for the community and anti social behaviour such as noise, car and crime etc" may have put people off. Surely this is what a PCSO would be doing. If you read the job requirements again and take out this passage it reads more like a job that is capable of being achieved in the stated 20 hours.

bandnwire, I can see what you are getting at re the job description.
But would you not agree that the section about looking out for the things which spoil our Town, and then reporting them to whoever is the proper authority, should be the job of everybody in the Town?

Sigh............. this is not really a discussion area, you are either interested in the job or you are not.

If you are interested you should contact the people on the document and find out more about it.

Please reply to either ADDRESS (provided on the document) BELOW by the 30th SEPTEMBER 2014
