UPM Tilhill don't own the land, they MANAGE it. The timber you see stacked in the photo has reacher its yield class (optimum age for felling). For whatever reason they opt to clear fell the relevant compartments, which is usually preceded by selective thinning of the selected compartments. The yield class of most pine species is between 30 & 35 years. If the trees are left over this age, future growth is minimal and the trees die off, resulting in heavy losses.

Given the stocking density of most of the compartments in the plantation, clear fell is the only viable method of harvesting a site such as this. Unfortunately, it is never a pretty site in the months after harvesting.

Once the brash has been cleared, the compartments will usually be restocked with saplings, for the process to begin again.

Is't it nice when you get a reply to an inquiry.
Thank you for your email, which I have forwarded to a Harvesting Manager in the West Yorkshire area.
Hopefully you will hear from him directly.

Kind regards

Last time I went up, a couple of years ago, some of the compartments had been planted up and looked to be thriving.

Re: Rivock Edge.

As discussed this morning I now attach the five year clear fell programme. In addition I have also attached the clear fell programme 6-10 years and the restocking map for your interest.

If there are any queries please do not hesitate to contact me.

Many regards

Now that the Dew stone is clear for all to see, I thought it best to take a picture.
