I did it myself last year in our kitchen, and I am far from a professional tradesman, I was worried about the plaster board stuff as it is really heavy, and I don't like the look of the polystyrene stuff, but I found and excellent alternative in Focus, Paper covered polystyrene coving, looks like the plasterboard stuff but is very light. and they do pre-formed corners so no cutting of the angles. The adhesive they supply to go in those gun type things can also be used to fill any holes/gaps/cracks (came in very useful as my house is over 100 years old and hasn't the straightest of walls. Just a quick lick of paint and it looks like it's been there years, I can't recommend it enough. Saved a load of cash by doing it myelf too!!
