About 10PM a group of youths setup a rocket launcher opposite the 3middle chippy by the wear & for the best part of the next hour fired rockets across the beck towards St.John's Close, the spent rockets etc. landing on the roofs of houses, onto cars, & into that street & also St.John's Street, one landing on my shoulder as it bounced off the roof of a building. The youths then collected all the evidence Y beggared off in cars, just as a number of residents went to accost them. Lots of concerned residents in the streets. Police car turned up about 15 minutes later, typical!

Why say typical for the Police?
How long before they arrived were they called?
How many other more important jobs were they dealing with?
Thanks to the Tory cuts there are a lot less Police now than there used to be!
Bonfire night is one night when all emergency services are stretched to the limit.
So stop moaning.

The passage of time can play tricks on the mind.It was actually quite some time before the Tory cuts that Silsden lost its police station and beat bobbies.

Gazzer, Yes it was some time ago that we lost the Police station, but we still had a Police presence supplied from Ilkley and Keighley.
I wont say just how many officers the force have lost under the Tory cuts but is is far to many, now even the elected commissionaire that the Tories forced on us are complaining and threatening to take the Tory to court to try and stop further cuts.

I find it hard to believe in this day and age of "Health & Safety", you can still buy rocket propelled missiles and bombs from the local paper shop.

They should only be for sale to professionals who put on properly organised displays.

I waited till 10.30 last night till all the fireworks had finished before taking the dog out.
Only to have that lot going off and scaring the living daylights out of him.

30 years ago the police presence in Silsden would not have let this happen. 10 years ago it would have still happened long before any cuts by the current Government.

So are you trying to make out that all these cut the Tories are making to or emergency services are OK, and they do not cause any problems?

If the Police turn up within 15 minutes, clearly not a murder case, is that not OK? Give them a break.....

Sorry Dexter, but the police vehicle turned up 15 minutes or so after these dimwits had disappeared. They had been firing rockets off across the beck for over an hour. A resident of St.John's Close had phoned the police shortly after the incident started. This incident could have had tragic consequences. As pointed out elsewhere it is illegal to set off fireworks in a public place without prior approval.

Gazzer, I remember in the 80's running fights in Kirkgate, near the Robin, & elsewhere, between Silsden lads & visiting lads from Sutton(I seem to remember), the police would turn up in force & restore order. Would we get such a response these days.

mickyfinn, did anyone record it, or take car reg numbers? how many were there.
There has been anti social behaviour by the canal swing bridge on and off for quite some time not sure whether the police patrol that area at night but it might be a good idea.Fireworks are not cheap, where do these lowlifes get their money from

No thats for another discussion. I am saying cuts by the current Government will not have made the slightest difference to last nights response time

Ginjo, these were four big lads, one in particular well over 6 foot. It would have been a bit foolish to accost them. They fired off at least a dozen expensive rockets, plus others, I guess these were rather expensive. There again these were not kids.

gazzer, You are wrong and you must know it, how can the force repond the same with far fewer officers?
And don't say there are not fewer officers because we all know there are.

This topic is about the misuse of fireworks and not the lack of police funding. I'm sure the police were kept VERY busy on Thursday Nov 5th.

If you would like to start a new topic on the subject of police funding I'm sure you will get a discussion which will allow you to put your political point of view on the subject.

On Thursday and Friday night, there were a lot of extra police on duty. They spent most of their time trying to protect the other emergency services who were being attacked with stones and fireworks in their line of duty and in comparison, anti social behaviour is far less important. Yes it's annoying and potentially dangerous but get some perspective!

BONFIRE night in Keighley was relatively peaceful, according to a spokesman for Keighley Fire Station.
He said the fire crew was called out to attend several different bonfires in the town, but did not face the same level of disorder as last year.
He added that fire fighters were expecting to deal with further bonfire-related events this coming weekend.
Last year's bonfire night in Keighley was marred by widespread disturbances, which included an attack on a family in Lund Park, and violence against fire crews in Highfield.

As the delayed response by police was mentioned on opening the thread followed by somebody giving a viewpoint on the reason police numbers are valid in this thread

"In 2000 the total police officer strength was just over 124,000"
"by September 2009 there were reported to be 144,833 police officers"
www.politics.co.uk/reference/police-numbers-and-recruitment

As of March 2015 there were "126,818" police officers
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/police-workforce-england-and-wales-31-march-2015/police-workforce-england-and-wales-31-march-2015

So its fair to say numbers have been cut but I was saying 30 years ago when numbers would have been similar to current with a smaller population. With a manned police station in Silsden I do no not think the firework event would have taken place. The level of policing in Silsden has been cut back for many years which is wrong whoever is in Government but it can not be said its just the current Government who have cut back the level of service in Silsden.
