No gas in South View Terrace. Seems that Craven Avenue, Laithe Close, Craven Court, Dradishaw Road, Beech Grove, Woodside Road amd other streets are affected too.

Apparently they have gone through a gas main on the new Barrett Homes site. Could affect a lot or all of the town and might be Saturday before it's fixed. Advised to turn off gas supply at meter for safety reasons.

This info is second hand from a person that spoke with British Gas.

Please will everybody check on their vulnerable neighbours, check they are able to stay warm, and access to warm food.
Also when the gas people begin visiting the area; to do the safety checks they will no doubt have to do, make sure you check they are the officials they claim to be!
When a similar incident happened some years ago in Steeton, there were some crooks knocking on doors pretending to be from Northern gas, in the hope of getting into peoples homes.

This might get interesting!

I haven't got the conditions appertaining to the Barrett Homes site specifically but the conditions for the Harron Homes site gaining planning permission said the following, and might be a standard clause for similar developments:

"6. Construction work shall only be carried out between the hours of 0730 and 1800 on Mondays to Fridays, 0730 and 1300 on Saturdays and at no time on Sundays, Bank or Public Holidays, unless specifically agreed otherwise in writing by the Local Planning Authority."

Gas board are advising ALL residents without gas to ring them and stay on the line whilst you switch it off.
They will send engineers out to turn back on( when the problem is fixed ) to ensure there are no problems.
Having just spoken with them, they have informed me there is no update on a likely fix any time soon, and there are hundreds of homes without gas.

There's now an incident report for this on the Northern Gas Networks site:

(although frankly there's more information on here. Probably worth watching for updates though.)

VERY strong smell of gas when we passed Aldi to go along Belton Road earlier this morning. Lots of Gas vans in area as well. Just come up from the dual carriage way, no smell at all now. Have visited neighbours to let them know what's happening and advised to switch down from main supply.

NGN engineers are currently attending an incident in the BD20 area after reports of loss of supply earlier today.

Our teams are working hard onsite after investigations found damage to a gas main caused by a third party contractor in the Silsden area.

Our engineers will be visiting all affected properties to isolate the gas supply to allow for repairs to be made.

Iain Foster, Network Supply Strategy Manager, said: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused. Our engineers are continuing to work hard onsite to support customers and resolve the issue.”

Details of onsite customer support are to follow.

Anyone who smells gas or suspects Carbon Monoxide should call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. This line is in operation 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

Rang the help line 0800 111 999 and gave details of who I am and where I live, these plus a contact number were registered. Have I switched the gas off at the meter? Yes. I was told that St James church hall is the place to go for information updates, and also told that some one from Northern gas would call to check all OK when the gas supply is reconnected. Several of our neighbours were completely in the dark about what is happening. Oh and I did ask if they had a provisional time/date when things would be back to normal? No was the reply

If you don't have any gas you need to turn gas off at the meter and ring Northern Gas on 08000407766 select option 3.

A gasman has to come round and turn the gas back on for each house and check!!!

Please pass this info on to neighbours/residents if they have no gas.

There is an incident room set up in St James. You can get a heater / electric hob if your household has a vulnerable resident. Vouchers are available for hot food from the local fish and chip shop.

Engineers are responding to a large loss of supply in the Silsden area, West Yorkshire.

Northern Gas Networks (NGN) is bringing in additional resources as engineers work tirelessly to rectify damage to gas mains caused by a third party contractor.

NGN was first notified of the damage caused to the gas main in the Silsden area on March 30.

With more than 2,000 properties estimated to be affected, NGN is drafting in additional engineers from other companies to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.

Teams need to access all affected properties to isolate the gas supply allowing for repairs to the mains to be carried out.

Iain Foster, Network Supply Strategy Manager, said: “We have a large task ahead of us and thank customers for their patience and cooperation. We estimate it will take a number of days to reinstate the gas supply. We’d like to apologise for the inconvenience caused and will be providing customers with regular updates on our progress.

“Our engineers are working late into the night to access properties and will be supported by additional resources from other companies in this process. Everyone will have an ID card and if you have any doubts about their identity you should call our customer care team on 0800 040 7766.”

A customer drop-in centre has been set up at St James’ Church Hall, Briggate, Silsden, BD20 NJS. Fan heaters and hot plates are available for vulnerable customers only.

There are vouchers available for hot food from the local fish and chip shop and there will be an onsite hot food facility open from 7.30pm this evening and from 8am tomorrow, March 31.

Any customers needing a hot shower can use the facilities at Keighley Leisure Centre from 7pm this evening until 9pm. The facilities will also be available from 6.30am until 7.30pm on March 31, and from 8am until 4pm on April 1. Customers should go to reception and say they have been impacted by the loss of supply incident in Silsden
.

NGN are working with engineers from Northern Powergrid who are closely monitoring the local electricity network and any potential knock-on increases in demand while residents are without their gas supply.

Northern Powergrid has indicated it currently has no network issues, however, if the electricity network was to become significantly overloaded it could increase the chance of damage and result in a power cut.

It has teams ready to respond if necessary, but to help reduce the risk of this happening at all residents are being encouraged to be especially aware of their energy usage.

To help reduce the risk of loss of power at a time when customers are also temporarily without gas, please ensure you:

minimise the use of appliances and switch off or unplug any electrical equipment that you do not need and heat only essential rooms stagger the use of high-demand electrical appliances such as cookers, heaters, kettles, immersion heaters, electric showers, dishwashers, tumble driers and washing machines.

If anyone requires additional support, they can speak to a member of the team onsite or contact NGN’s Customer Care Team on 0800 040 7766.

Anyone that smells gas or suspects Carbon Monoxide should call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. This line is in operation 24-hours a day, seven days a week

Latest information from John Grogan MP.

"Statement re Gas Supply in Silsden

This evening I met representatives of Northern Gas Networks and the Leader of the Council in St James’s Church Hall to receive a briefing on the loss of gas supplies in Silsden. The Hall is currently the centre of operations although I understand Silsden Town Hall may be used on Sunday particuarly with celebrations of Easter Sunday in the Church

It is an impressive operation that has been put on site quickly . There were 26 fitters working this evening in the town.On Saturday there will be 120 fitters plus another 80 staff. Nearly 1000 electric heaters have been distributed . There is a strong community spirit in evidence with many local people giving up their Bank Holiday weekend to assist .

I am hopeful that the restoration of supplies could begin on Saturday but I understand this is likely to be a phased process . It could be several days before full supplies are restored . The properties nearest the new development at Belton Road where the supply was breached will be turned on first and then the rest of the town in sequence

Staff have to visit all 3752 properties in Silsden to isolate the gas supply to every property so it is then safe to start introducing gas back into network

Every property is then visited again to assist with turning the gas and appliances back on.

A letter will will be delivered to all houses tomorrow .Volunteers will help distribute them.

Some vulnerable residents are being housed in hotels . Food vouchers are available at the hall and redeemable at food vans just outside the building or at Eastburn fish and chip shop

Customers will receive compensation for loss of supply . Northern Gas Networks will announce further details shortly

I will keep in touch with the operation over the weekend.

John Grogan
MP Keighley"

Here's the latest.
POSTED ON 30 MARCH 2018 AT 9:51 PM

Engineers are working late into the night responding to the large loss of supply in the Silsden area.

The customer support centre set up at St James’ Church Hall will close to the public at 11pm and reopen tomorrow morning from 8am. Onsite food facilities will also open at 8am providing breakfast and other hot food.

Northern Gas Networks (NGN) received reports of a loss of supply in the BD20 area this morning after a third party contractor damaged a gas main.

Tomorrow our engineers will be supported by engineers from other organisations to continue the process of accessing all affected properties.

We are expecting 125 engineers to be working on this incident, safely isolating the gas supply allowing for repairs to the mains to be carried out.

Iain Foster, Network Supply Strategy Manager, said: “We estimate it will take a number of days to reinstate the gas supply to all affected customers and thank them for their continued patience.

“Engineers will have ID cards and if you have any doubts about their identity you should speak with members of our team in the customer support centre or call our Customer Care Team on 0800 040 7766.”

Fan heaters and hot plates are available for vulnerable customers at the customer support centre along with food vouchers for several outlets in the Silsden area.

Shower facilities have been made available to customers at Keighley Leisure Centre from 6.30am until 7.30pm tomorrow and again from 8am until 4pm on April 1.

If anyone requires additional support they can speak to a member of the team onsite or contact NGN’s Customer Care Team on 0800 040 7766.

Anyone that smells gas or suspects Carbon Monoxide should call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. This line is in operation 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

Representatives from Barrett's builders have been on site and are expected back at St James hall.

The library volunteers have been printing thousands of leaflets for distribution to all households this morning.

As of 1 o'clock Northern Gas believe 3874 houses have no gas affecting over 8000 people.

When they closed last night Gas Board representatives had visited just over 1000 houses and that work was continuing today with the help of volunteers and Bradford Council Staff.

They have given out over 1500 fan heaters and numerous hot plates and are now delivering fan heaters and hot plates to vulnerable people who can't get down to the centre.

Northern Gas has staff from Newcastle and Sunderland and have arranged hot food at Wesley Place Car Park. They are arranging vegan meals for some members of the community. The Town hall is offering teas and coffees and Belluci's cafe will be opening tomorrow and Monday. They are also providing vouchers redeemable at a number stores for those who want to make their own meals.

Should provide proof of residency or clear off. We are managing perfectly well here, comes down to being on the ball. Can understand elderly not coping, but surely most folk have freezers, toasters and microwaves that we can rely on for a few days without succumbing to handouts. Only downside is hot water and heaters, but hey ho we'll get over it.

Maybe the time has now come to ask how contractors working at the Belton site were unable to discover where the main gas pipeline passed through their worksite. It beggers belief that they were unaware of its existence. One hopes that their company will be financially embarrassed.
