You could have a leak somewhere in the system from the boiler to the radiators .

Water was coming out the safety valve outlet, the copper pipe outside that's angled round to discharge against the wall to prevent scalding.

That usually means the expansion vessel inside the boiler has lost its pressure.Sometimes it can be just pumped up but it may require replacing.Pumping up the pressure is the first option.If you put 1bar pressure in the system then run the heating and watch the pressure guage.If when the system becomes hot check the guage and see if it has gone upto/passed 3bar.That would 95% prove its the expansion vessel at fault.
